SCHINK
LAWRENCE

To help you find your
direction, to develop a unique personal voice in painting, Skip Lawrence
and Christopher Schink have designed a distinctly different workshop. In
this class, they address the questions: what, why, and how?
What are you going to paint? Why are you going to paint it?
And, finally, how are you going to paint it?
In the conventional watercolor
workshop, these questions were never asked or the answers were presumed.
What are you going to paint? The answer always included the
typical watercolor fare---a barn with trees, boats in the harbor, or a
still life with flowers---and the subject matter rarely changed. The
why was presumed: you painted them because that's what
watercolorists did. And the how was determined by the
instructor whose technique and style you were encouraged to imitate.
With hard work, you were eventually able to produce a conventional,
competent watercolor in a style that looked suspiciously like your
instructor's.
We take a different approach that
offers more choices.
We try to encourage you to find the particular things you want to express
and help you identify the qualities you want to convey in your work.
We offer a variety of approaches that you might employ to make your work
effective.
To accomplish this, we developed a
class that explores in slide shows and illustrations the use of color and
design by past and present artists. We demonstrate how you can apply
these ideas in your own work. We help you define what it is you
want to say in your painting and offer possibilities and choices for
expressing your ideas and feelings. In short, we help each student
find a personal message and a personal graphic language that
will make his/her work uniquely his/her own.
Each day will begin with a lesson
either illustrated with slides or prints and/or demonstrated. These
lessons offer a variety of ways to employ shape, space, and color in a
painting. You then explore how these ideas might be adapted to your
own particular expressive intent. The daily critiques are designed
to help participants understand how to make work more effective and
satisfying.
This team-taught workshop will be a
unique learning experience for any serious painter. We bring over
sixty years of combined teaching experience, a broad knowledge of art
history, and a light and enthusiastic touch to this different kind of
workshop. We hope you will join us!
